Voices of Fashion: Black Couture, Beauty & Styles critiques the Eurocentric lens through which fashion has long been presented, consumed and finally collected by museums. It traces the phenomenon back to historical practices such as European colonialism, the effects of which continue to shape the global fashion industry today. Consider, for instance, who we accept as chroniclers of fashion, and who and what they choose to highlight. Who is acknowledged in the beauty ideals that dominate magazine covers and catwalks? Voices of Fashion fills in some of the missing pieces of the story through personal accounts and contributions by designers, artists and models from the Netherlands and abroad.
